Why It’s Important to Vote in School Board Elections

This fall, Gilpin County residents in RE-1 will be voting to elect 3 out of the 5 School Board members. Residents in RE-2 will be voting to elect 4 out of the 7 School Board members, including a representative for your portion of the school district.

Many people choose not to vote for School Board elections because they don’t have children in the schools. However, it’s just as important for parents of schoolchildren to vote in School Board elections as it is for those without children in the schools.

1. The reputation of our local school districts has an impact on the value of our homes. If they have a good reputation, our homes are generally valued higher.

2. Currently, there is an effort across our country to add more conservatives to school boards. This will undermine the traditional public school values of our communities, including the democratic value of the separation of church and state.

3. We need to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are honored in our schools. We should be voting for candidates who will uplift ALL students. You are helping to support diversity and respect for all cultures in our local communities. This is an opportunity to give a voice to students who feel unseen, unheard, or disrespected in our school systems.

4. Local school boards set policies including teacher pay and benefits. In order to improve educational opportunities, these policies should support teachers so that we attract the most creative.

5. Gun Violence, especially in schools, is at an all time high. Voting in this election can ensure that the legislature begins to pass from the bottom up. Reform begins in our communities.
