Gilpin Dems Double Down
When State Senator Dylan Roberts said he could attend a Gilpin County Dems picnic, we asked, “What day works for you?” It turns out that it was First Responders Day. How did we respond? We need to do both!
One team went to William C Russell Park just outside of Central City with shade tents, grills, food, beverages, and a rockin’ country playlist while a second team went to the Community Center to set up a tent, table, chairs, decorations, coloring books, Lifesavers, and Hugs & Kisses candies.
At the park, Senator Roberts and his toddler son Teddy drew a crowd of about 40 people to the picnic for hot dogs, veggie dogs & brats along with an enormous assortment of salads, watermelon, cookies & brownies. Visitors included local residents from Prospector’s Run, RE-1 School Board candidate Tami Velasquez, Carolyn Collins Petersen (President of the Friends of the Gilpin County Community Center), Clear Creek Dems Chair Laurie Beckel, along with many of our strong supporters.
Several people attended both events, most notably our dedicated elected officials: Commissioner Sandy Hollingsworth, Clerk & Recorder Sahari McCormick, Assessor April Nielsen, and Coroner Zane Laubhan. As Commissioner Hollingsworth said, “It’s really important that we make every effort to support the First Responders” and we agree. With their children happily occupied with coloring books and candy, interested mothers and fathers discussed issues such as funding for fire mitigation in local neighborhoods, the upcoming election (November 7) where voters will decide whether to maintain current property tax rates (Gilpin has the second lowest property tax rate among 64 counties in Colorado) to provide a dedicated source of funding for the Community Center, and other local topics of interest.
We are truly grateful for your support whether that comes in the form of stopping by the Howlin Wind for a frosty beverage (second Wednesday of every month), joining us to pick up trash along the Peak-to-Peak Highway (TBA), attending our annual fundraiser, or any one of our other events throughout the year.
